So it was a long night but one of the best ever. A date with bubbly followed by kittens!!!!
At the beginning of this year I begun a new life in a house by the sea. I call the house 'our crumbling castle by the sea'. It is old and beautiful but very much in need of some love. We moved here because it is 1. By the Sea 2. Big and reasonable 3. We fell in love with it's hidden loveliness.

A peek in my favourite room
This is the only room we have really done anything to. This is the bedroom. It is unfinished by far but we have managed to paint the walls, make wardrobes and fill it with pretty things.
One of my favourite parts of this room is the fireplace. Above it hangs a picture that my clever Mummy painted. She also made the cat picture. The family of grumpy cats are like Russian Dolls, they were a special moving in gift. The miniature items are pencil sharpeners, they were in my stocking at Christmas. They came from a whole collection of sharpeners belonging to a lady who donated them to a charity shop. Mine are a little hurricane lantern and typewriter.
As well as all things feline I also have an obsession with birds. These two are lovely. The glass one on the left is 1960's. Mama bartered for her when she visited at Macknades in Faversham. Think she has been watching one too many daytime antique shows. My favourite line is when she refused to pay £13 because it was unlucky! Well done Mama.
This is the alcove with my decorated chest of drawers. I stripped the drawers then masking taped the tree shape before painting it. The mirror was found in the house. This area also houses my postcards. I love postcards as they are such a great way of sharing images. They keep falling down though maybe some better blutack is needed. Spot the ugly plug half way up the wall. When we moved in they were all like this. Most have been moved, but this one has slipped the net. We really must move it down as it ruins the fireplace.
I think the biggest fans of this room are the cats (real ones) they love sunbathing in here in the spring sunshine and staring out to sea. They scare me silly hanging out the window looking at the seagulls on the roof opposite.

On one wall I have an 'aviary'. These are all the bird pictures I have been gifted/ collected.

In the beginning
So it is I live in a house that's a mess, that is crazy and needs a lot of love. A couple of weeks ago my family came to stay. I love this house but it made me feel panicky. Embarrassed by its crumbling walls I wanted them to see what I could see but all of a sudden I could only see the bad. They went round like everyone does, listing the work that needs to be done, looking concerned and offering advice. EEK! There is so much to do and so much for us to learn. Aggggh its too much and I'm always going to live in a crumbling house that smells funny and is full of holes. It made me all upset to think that people wouldn't want to come and stay.
A few days later Natalie (who lives with us) returned from a trip in Austria. It was amazing to list all the things that had changed over the last 3 weeks. Small things but lots...
- The old sofas and junk had gone from the living room and bathroom
- The bathroom had shelves, an unusual dresser and a toilet roll holder!
- The kitchen had a new shelf in the cupboard so I can organise to my hearts content
- There is a new rug on the kitchen floor
- Ikea provided us with an awesome kitchen trolley on wheels
- All my decorations in the bedroom are complete
- The whole place was finally hoovered
- We had a glorious bootsale and made £80
- All of my junk is put away and not hanging around downstairs
- I made up a chest to store bin bags
OK this is all quite mundane but the real purpose of this blog is to preserve my sanity. To keep a check on all the things we do rather than look at how much there is left to do. To keep track and monitor the progress. To picture before and after. To check back and see how far we've come.
Then hopefully people will return and I will catch more of their excitement too, recognising wallpapers and flooring from the past, marvelling at the fireplaces, envious of the view.
